Types of flower beds: what are there and how to do it yourself

Colorful and fragrant flower beds are an integral decorative element of the landscape at the dacha or personal plot. There are several dozen options for creating flower beds, and many of them can rightfully be called real masterpieces of art - original forms, a combination of colors and shades create the impression of a picture painted with paints. Looking at such beauty, it seems that it is simply impossible to recreate some types of flower beds on your own. But in fact, it is quite simple. The main thing is to decide what kind of flower bed you want, and find out what is required to make it with your own hands.

Regular flower bed

Regular flower beds are often found in city parks, in the territories of offices and institutions. The main difference between such compositions is strict geometric shapes, a symmetrical pattern of flowers, where a clear boundary between plants and their color range is defined. For this type of flower bed, it is important that all flowers present in the composition bloom at the same time. The illumination of regular flower beds is of particular importance. They should be placed so that no shadow falls on the plants - only under this condition is the uniform flowering of flower arrangements possible.

Arranging a regular flower bed in the country is not often practiced, since its creation requires a large area where there is no shade from trees. But if the area allows, then organizing such a flower garden with your own hands will not be difficult. However, you need to understand that to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the composition, it will take a lot of time, as well as financial costs, since the plants will need to be regularly watered and fed. However, the result obtained compensates for all costs - with proper care, a regular flower bed looks really luxurious.

Irregular flower bed

This type of flower bed is characterized by chaotic planting of flowers in small groups, which makes the flower garden more natural. Not a single plot in the country can do without such a flower garden, since it is not difficult to take care of it, it does not require large financial investments, and the whole warm season pleases with flowering.

A distinctive feature of irregular flower beds is the absence of strict flower patterns - the planting zones of flowers can overlap and overlap. The composition can be of any size and shape. Also, the simultaneous flowering of plants is not provided here. Usually flowers are selected so that the composition blooms in waves and for a long time - some flowers faded, and others bloom to replace them. Arranging irregular flower beds with your own hands has some features:

  • flower gardens also require good illumination, and care must be taken that taller plants do not shade lower ones;

  • you need to plant flowers taking into account the cardinal points - all plants turn towards the sun, and if you have to admire the flower garden from the north side, then the heads of most flowers will be turned in the other direction;
  • you also need to take into account the location of the flower arrangements in relation to the paths, viewing platforms: in the foreground, stunted flowers should grow, in the far - tall ones;
  • if the flower bed is visible from all sides, then tall plants are planted in the center, and lower ones closer to the edge;
  • it is important to take into account the period of their flowering when planting flowers - if you plant flowers of the same type, then when they fade, the flower bed will become empty and become unsightly, therefore it is recommended to plant many different plants, both annuals and perennials;

There are no clear rules and restrictions in creating irregular flower beds with your own hands - fantasize, experiment with colors. This will make the composition more natural and harmonious.

Carpet

Carpet beds are used mainly in urban landscape gardening, but even at the dacha it is quite within the power of every owner of the property to create such a composition with his own hands. This type of flower garden is a living carpet with a clear pattern, composed of low-growing flowers with multi-colored foliage and a simultaneous flowering period. When the flowerbed blooms, it seems that this is a real fluffy carpet with original ornaments.

Carpet flower beds look very nice, but they need special care. When arranging flower arrangements in the country, you need to calculate your time so that at least once a week several hours of time are devoted to the flower bed for the following activities:

  • it is necessary to ensure that the pattern is not disturbed (the plants did not go beyond the boundary line) - for this you need to regularly cut off the regrown shoots and flowers;
  • you also need to remove dried inflorescences in time - otherwise the flower bed will look neglected;

  • to maintain the proper appearance of the flowerbed, regular watering is required - if the composition was created using flower plants in pots, then watering should be carried out more often, since the soil in the pots dries out quickly.

The maintenance of a carpet flower bed in the country is a rather troublesome business, however, after spending a little time, in return you will receive a truly luxurious flower garden that guests and neighbors will admire.

Raised

For a raised flower bed, as the name implies, placement on a certain elevation is characteristic. In fact, this is a container for flowers, most often of the correct shape in the form of a square, rectangle, polyhedron. A distinctive feature of the flower bed is a curb with a height of 20 cm and more, made of a variety of materials: boards, brick, concrete, stone, any improvised means.

Such a flower bed is usually located on a hard surface, at the main entrance, along the sidewalk, or walkway. At the dacha, you can install a raised structure in the backyard, in the recreation area, at the entrance to the house - a pair of symmetrical flower beds located in the front of the site looks very solemn. Arranging a raised flower garden with your own hands is within the power of even inexperienced flower growers. Having built a fence, you just need to fill up a drainage layer on which to lay the soil. If necessary, you can add a universal fertilizer to the soil. Next, we plant flowers - usually annuals are used for such beds.

Raised flower beds can be located in any container, reservoir. Some inventive summer residents arrange flower beds in old used furniture. Raised structures can be used to build multi-level and cascading compositions. It is important to understand that the soil in such containers dries out quickly, so the plants need regular watering.

Classic

Classic flower beds are most often used to decorate the landscape space in the country. This type of flower garden is characterized by planting flowers of one specific type, and sometimes color. Such flower beds, as a rule, are placed along the paths and are used to visually delineate zones.

When creating classic flower beds with your own hands, you need to carefully approach the choice of flower plants - they should be bright and decorative. Large flowers look perfect from a distance: dahlias, roses, peonies, tulips. Giving the flower garden a certain, better, correct shape will relieve the impression that the plants were planted spontaneously or accidentally.

Vertical

Vertical flower beds are ideal for landscaping small areas in the country, as well as for masking any unsightly areas or structures. In addition, blooming hedges as decoration for walls, fences, gazebos, garden arches are unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. Creating a vertical flower bed with your own hands is a laborious and responsible process. Indeed, when organizing such flower arrangements, you need to take into account many important points:

  • choose the most suitable design for the flower garden, taking into account the shape, weight, material;

  • to provide reliable fastening for the future flower bed;
  • think over and, if necessary, lay an irrigation system;
  • prepare the soil base and pick up the plants.

Weaving plants are used to create hedges or screens. For their growth, it is necessary to install a support - a frame made of wood, wire or thin rope. For the device of multi-tiered flower arrangements, it is necessary to purchase special plastic or metal lattices, multi-tiered boxes, material for hydroponics.

In containers for vertical beds, as a rule, curly or ampelous flowers are planted - they hang down, and during flowering form a living wall. If desired, a floral figured sculpture can be installed on the site. And so that the soil does not spill out in an upright position, it is better to use hydroponics for sculpture (a material that replaces soil). Of course, such a composition requires a lot of imagination and effort, but the result is worth it.

How to make beautiful flower beds decorated with stones: choosing the right materials and breeds

Tired of the endless beds in the country and you are wondering what to replace them with? Try to make flower beds from stones, you can arrange a very beautiful alpine slide or a classic round flower garden with your own hands. They look very attractive, they organize the space well and they can be used to decorate any site.

Various structures can be used as a support. Whichever type of support you choose, it is important to remember that first of all, this element must fulfill its functional role, and therefore must correspond to some characteristics.

  • Reliability and durability. The rose holder must be stable and sturdy. At first glance, it may seem that the climbing rose is a rather light plant in terms of weight, however, in reality this is not entirely true. The blossoming fluffy pink flowers, as well as the developed shoots of the bush, can make up a rather large mass, therefore, it is worth ensuring the strength of the support. The rack structure must be well constructed and only quality materials should be used for its construction. In addition, some supports are dug into the soil to provide an additional level of stability.

  • Aesthetic appearance. Despite the fact that the stand for a climbing rose, first of all, should perform its functional purpose with high quality, do not forget about the appearance of the structure. So, it is desirable that the support does not stand out in its appearance against the background of the site, it should imperceptibly, but at the same time, fit beautifully into the general landscape. Sometimes, for such purposes, the support is painted in neutral colors or a material of a suitable shade is used.
  • Comparability. Sometimes, in pursuit of reliability, gardeners, even on miniature and compact rose bushes, install supports that are rather bulky in size. Such reassurance is unnecessary, and can spoil the appearance of the plant as a whole. Nevertheless, if a rather large bush grows on your site, then you should not choose a support that is too small, not appropriate for the size of the plant.

  • Environmental Safety. The stand must meet all environmental standards, be safe for nature.
  • Convenience and ease of use. You should not choose multifunctional, complex and complex structures as a support for a flower. The stand must fulfill its main function, and it does not need additional accessories.
  • Economy. This function concerns both the material (you should not buy too expensive structure, but you can try to assemble the support yourself) and overall (the rack should not take up too much space) aspects.

Let's take a closer look at the popular and most functional types of stands for a climbing rose.

Trellis

This type is one of the simplest in its design. The tapestry is rarely bought in stores or in the markets, because it is quite easy to make it with your own hands even for a beginner, and this does not require a lot of effort, time, materials or financial resources.

A trellis is a kind of mesh, most often made of wood (usually thin wooden boards are used). It is important to note that such a rose stand meets all the characteristics and features described above.

This type of rack is the second most popular. Constructions of this kind combine decorativeness and functionality. In addition, they are able to sustain a fairly large number of roses on their base.

Often, in spacious gardens, a series of arches are built at once, thus constructing a kind of corridor. On each of the arches, both the same and different types of roses can weave. It turns out especially beautifully if you alternate plants of several colors or shades of the same tone.

Pergola

A pergola is a slatted roof installed on supporting gardens. This type is an improved analogue of an ordinary arch. Usually, the posts for the arch are made of metal, and the upper part is made of wood.

It should be noted that pergolas and arches, in addition to their direct function of supporting a climbing rose, can also perform an additional purpose, namely: zoning a garden or vegetable garden.

Pillars

This is one of the more obvious options, and yet not suitable for all types of roses. The pillar along which the rose will trail must be made of durable material, and also be firmly anchored in the ground. In the garden, you can install single pillars, but you can also design such supports in a row.

Cones (pyramids)

In order to make a support for a rose in the form of a cone, several pillars should be connected and secured from above. Thus, a rather voluminous stand is obtained - a rose can trail not only outside, but also inside the cone.

What and how to make a fence

The most common flower bed fencing is brick, wild stone, boulders. A structure can be made of bricks in a strict "ceremonial" manner. Boulders and wild stone are more intimate, non-standard fences.

Since they have a decent weight, a foundation is often made under a brick or stone fence for a flower bed. Not if one or two rows fit, but if there are four or more rows. If the device goes on a concrete site, you can do without a foundation at all, but if a flower bed is broken on a lawn or soil, then it is advisable to do it.

It is not even necessary to fasten two rows of stone or brick with mortar. They can simply be laid out one on top of the other, covered with geotextiles from the inside and covered with earth. Brick flowerbeds made in this way will have to be corrected often: bricks can "move out" from their place

The first step is to remove the sod on the marked area. If you plan to make a high flower bed, dig a groove around the perimeter, about 20 cm deep, and 5-10 cm wider than the planned fence in width. This ditch is filled with crushed stone, rammed, spilled with liquid cement-sand mortar. For 1 part of M400 cement, take 4-5 parts of clean sand, mix and pour water until sour cream. Rubble is poured with this semi-liquid solution. When the concrete sets - you need to wait a few days - you can lay out the border for the flower beds.

How to make a brick or stone border

Do-it-yourself flower beds and flower beds made in a fence of stone and brick are the most expensive in the device, but also the most durable.They will stand for several years without any problems.

Stones or bricks are placed on a cement-sand mortar, similar to the one with which crushed stone was poured, but thicker. There should not be a lot of mortar between the bricks - 5-8 mm. If you put cobblestones or natural stone, it is easier to first fold them "on dry" by choosing the size, and then transfer them with mortar.

A few ideas on how to arrange stone borders for flower beds and flower beds in the photo gallery below.

When building a round border for a brick flower bed, it is more economical to use halves Small grout joints between the stones and are not visible (in the process, until the concrete has hardened completely, you can clean them to a depth of 5-8 mm) If the flower bed is located near the wall, the wall must be treated with waterproofing (bituminous mastic twice) The chipped limestone around the flower beds looks great. Flowerbeds of stones with your own hands can be made in a non-standard or geometric shape Ceramic bricks of different colors and paths sprinkled with tinted gravel and a courtyard with a flower bed looks great This is a curb for a cobblestone flower bed. The technique used is different - a roller is formed from a semi-dry solution, small stones are stuck into it

If you do not need to raise the plantings so much, and you only want to mark the boundaries of the area planted with flowers, but are afraid that if the brick is simply dug in, it will fall, then you can dig a trench, fill it with rubble, and insert flagstone into the rubble (stone sawn on plates , it can be found in the section selling materials for the exterior decoration of the house) or standing to put bricks. Spill liquid cement-sand mortar around the installed elements of the fence. After two or three days, when the concrete has set, you can continue to work: fill up the fertile soil, but you cannot load the curb or step on it for about a month: it takes so much time for it to gain strength.

By the same principle, you can make a do-it-yourself frame for a flower bed from slate or tiles cut into strips. A flower bed can be made of metal or asbestos slate. There are scraps left after installing the roof - use them. Here's what you can get.

Made of wood

It is easier to make a fence for a flower bed made of wood: it does not weigh so much. On the other hand, it is less durable. Do-it-yourself flower beds and flower beds from wood can stand for several seasons. Then you will have to restore or alter them. It is used very rarely for ceremonial flower beds, but in the country or near a private house, a flower garden fenced with a wooden border is original and stylish. Especially if it has something in common with the style of design of buildings on the site.

You can use wood in any form to decorate summer cottages. They make flower beds from boards, small-diameter round timber (small logs), block house (boards, convex on one side, similar to a log) and any other wooden remains. You can even cut a dead tree into chocks, bury / hammer them into the ground, making such an unusual flower bed.

Log halves can also be folded into a fence for a raised flower garden Birch woods - an excellent fence for a flower garden An interesting idea for a high flower bed - a well is made of scraps of logs Even an old log can be turned into a flower garden Two pieces of a block house, set one on top of the other - and in front of you is already an excellent summer cottage flower bed Wooden flower beds knocked down from boards are built in a few hours Even if the wood is untreated, it has its own charm.

How to make a wooden border? Find a small diameter log, cut it into chocks of different lengths and split them in half. You will get blanks, as in the photo on the left. They are laid on a flat surface with the convex side down, one next to the other. They take a flexible thick wire and use staples from a construction stapler or bent studs to attach the wire to the flat side of the pieces of wood. One wire is nailed at the bottom, the other at the top. It turns out a flexible border made of wood, which can be used to enclose a flower garden of any shape (pictured on the right).

How to make a fence for a flower garden out of wood

So that the wood does not lose its attractiveness and does not rot, it is treated with protective impregnations. They can simultaneously give it color, or they can be colorless. From such pieces of wood collected in a ribbon, you can make flower beds with your own hands of any shape. Dig a shallow groove, slightly wider than your fence, insert a fence for a flower bed there and sprinkle it with earth, tamp it.

From such a ribbon you can saddle such beauty

From boards and beams

In our country, wood is one of the most inexpensive building materials. Therefore, they build from it a lot and often. They are made of wood and a fence or fence for flower beds. The easiest way is to enclose a flower bed with boards. For support, you will need several bars - not very thick, but wide. Approximately 50 * 150mm and edged board 20mm thick. Choose its width yourself so that several pieces installed on the edge give you the required height.

Soak the wood with protective impregnations, when it dries, you can start working. Support bars are installed first. They can be sharpened at one end and carefully hammered without damaging the upper surface (put a piece of a bar and hit on it), or you can dig a hole about 50 cm deep, install a bar in it, bury and compact the earth around. Bars are installed in increments of 1-1.5 meters, depending on how wide the flower garden will be. The wider and higher it is, the greater the mass will have to be held, therefore supports are more often put.

Boards are nailed to the exposed supports. They can be stuffed from the inside and then the support bars will be visible, or from the outside. In the second option, only a wall of planks will be visible. The joints of the boards should fall on the beams.

Plank beds can be made in a variety of shapes. Even in the form of a pyramid. There are some interesting ideas below.

Multi-tiered flowerbed-pyramid made of boards And this is how to make a flower bed in the form of a pyramid A pyramid-shaped flower bed made of small boxes, of different sizes, set one after another Such a flower bed can be placed in the center of a large Having knocked together several boxes of different shapes, they can be installed side by side or on top of each other Neat and beautiful

Made of plastic

There are many types of ready-made fences for flower beds and flower beds made of plastic or plastic. They have special legs that are immersed in the ground along the edge of the planted area.

But we are not talking about them, but about flower beds made of scrap materials. For example, you can make a decent fence for a flower bed out of plastic bottles.

They are selected by displacement and color. This will make the fence look better. Then the necks are cut off at the same level and stuck into the ground. This is one mounting option for creating a low curb. The second will turn out to be much higher. It can be used in fondant taller plants. In this case, they take a wooden bar, to it at a certain distance, so that the bottles are close to one another, the lids are nailed. Bottles are screwed into the caps. To make such a plastic fence for a flower garden more stable, it is pierced through with wire closer to the bottoms and closer to the narrowing point at the neck. The finished section of the fence is installed and fixed on the ground.

Despite the fact that the material is waste, if everything is done carefully, such a fence looks decent, nice, nice. A photo of fences for flower beds and flower beds made of plastic bottles is in the photo below.

Choosing flowers for a flower bed of stones

Plants for a flower bed must be selected based on its type. For example, hyacinths, assorted roses, daffodils, lilies, tulips and gladioli, astilbe, and hosts are great for a regular-style flower garden. Flowers planted in the form of an oval, rhombus or square look spectacular and stylish.

If you need to choose plants for a flower garden decorated in a landscape style, you should forget about the system - in this case, the flowers should grow arbitrarily, although they obey the general composition. This option is considered the most advantageous for rock gardens and rockeries.

The following types of plants are suitable: roses, wild strawberries, spring crocuses, corydalis, Carpathian bell.

Small conifers can become a worthy decoration of a flower bed of stones: dwarf pine, barberry, thuja, creeping willow. The landscape of the backyard area is remarkably diversified by a flower bed with small shrubs, creeping plants (thyme, Carpathian bell, euphorbia), perennials (evergreen Iberis, carnation). Small, graceful flowers are planted in the crevices of the masonry, which are not afraid of dry weather.

For a vertical stone bed, a liana is best suited. A green carpet will transform the most empty or darkest corners of the garden or cover the prosaic wall of the house. For delicate vines of magnolia vine, clematis, actinidia and wisteria, you will need supports that can withstand them.

Stages of arranging a flower bed of stones with your own hands

We will consider the main work on creating a flower garden from stones using the example of a flower bed made of stones, built with our own hands from several stone levels.

This type of structure combines the fragility of ornamental plants and the solidity of natural stone. So:

  1. To make the flower bed solid and durable, we advise you to start work with pouring the foundation. With the help of wooden slats and a rope, it is necessary to mark the place where the flower garden will appear in the future. Along the perimeter of the territory, it is worth digging a trench up to 40 centimeters deep, the width of which will be sufficient to accommodate the selected stones. Remove the sod from this part of the plot
  2. The soil must be covered with a piece of roofing material or polyethylene of a suitable size. You can start laying the concrete base. Stones can be placed on top only after it has dried. It is important to note that a concrete support is not a prerequisite for creating a flower garden. Sometimes it is enough to equip a groove around the structure, place geotextiles inside and pour sand on ¾. Having thoroughly tamped the material, you can lay out boulders on top
  3. The stone bed owes its originality to the unique appearance of the stones. That is why some elements of the flower garden are difficult to match with each other - the appearance of crevices is inevitable. They should be covered with ordinary earth, but at the same time they should be tamped well. As a result, you should have a masonry of stones, half peeking out of the trench, securely fixed with sand and earth. The basis for the flower bed is ready
  4. After the final hardening of the cement, it is necessary to apply a sealant to the masonry, which protects the joints of the material from cracks. Then you can fill the flowerbed with high-quality soil mixture, and after another week - plant flowers there.

Choose or do it yourself?

Many men, who are able to create masterpieces with their hands, not only with a brush and paints, but also with the help of typical male tools, refuse to spend money and time looking for and buying the right palette knife if there is an opportunity to make it with their own hands. As the experience of such people shows, the result turns out to be very worthy: it hits the wallet much less, and most importantly, it meets the wishes of its owner as much as possible.

The most difficult thing in the process of self-production of a spatula is creating a blade of the required shape. First you need to find a piece of metal (hardly anyone will waste time on a home release of a plastic version), from which you can make a blade. From the options for potential raw materials offered on the Internet, old spatulas for construction purposes, old hacksaws and even a Soviet-made metal folding rule look realistic. Depending on the shape and size of the raw sheet, blanks for future blades are cut out of it using a grinder, a special hacksaw or metal scissors.

Shaping is made possible by sharpening and sanding the edges, which also determines the sharpness of the blade.

The part that provides the connection between the blade and the handle can be manufactured in different ways. If the sheet of metal used was quite large, it is better, in the process of cutting the blade, to immediately make it solid, combined with the core of the future handle. In this case, the metal workpiece will need to be bent, for which it is heated white-hot.

A similar procedure can be performed even at home, if the metal is heated long enough over an ordinary gas burner, but then you need to follow safety precautions as carefully as possible... You can fasten the individual parts from which a homemade spatula is made using a large nail, for example, a slate nail. It must be bent at the desired angle and inserted into both parts of the palette knife through specially made holes.

A handle for a homemade spatula can be made independently by carving it out of wood on a machine, but buying a finished product will also be very practical, which will cost the consumer several tens of rubles. As a rule, there is already a hole in the factory blank for inserting a metal part, which you just need to correctly flatten from the side opposite to the blade in order to avoid loosening the structure.

After that, it is worth again knocking the joints with a hammer in order to properly flatten the joints and ensure the immobility of fastening some parts to others. The exact cost of a hand-made palette knife varies greatly depending on the availability of available tools from which it can be made. However, users who have experience with such crafts indicate the cost of producing one such tool within a hundred rubles.
