The cultivation of this plant began in Italy in the 1940s almost contemporaneously with that of the carnation. While a very high number of people have worked for this second species in search of new hybrids, in Italy, very few people are dedicated to it, so much so that today all the cultivars used are imported from France and Holland.

It is mainly cultivated in greenhouses because it is a very sensitive plant to low temperatures, especially at night.

The cultivated roses are all hybrids, that is to say the result of various crossings that occurred especially between European roses, among which Rosehip and roses of the Far East among which we remember the Multiflora rose.

Rosehip

Multiflora rose

Different ways are followed to obtain different cultivars of roses: crosses between different varieties of roses (interspecific); crosses between different species of roses (intraspecific), natural mutations; human-induced mutations with appropriate mutagenic agents (X, Y and ultraviolet rays).

Since it is not humanly possible to list all the varieties on the market, we will consider only some, among the most representative. Roses are usually classified according to their size: large, medium and small flowered roses.

THE ROSE SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF AN ARTIST

I love this flower. It represents for me a timeless beauty. The two opposites of femininity, beauty and difficulty. Even in the very execution of a work that portrays roses, various difficulties arise, due to technique and color; each squad, like women, differentiates between peers for many characteristics, so every time the work begins, it is always like the first one.
