Thorny tartar (lat. Onopordum acanthium, eng. Cotton thistle) is a tall (up to 2.5 meters) two-year-old herb of the Aster family with an erect stem branched to the top.

Tartar leaves are oblong, alternate, provided with thorns. The lower leaves are petiolate, and the upper ones are sessile.

The flowers of the tartar are collected in baskets located at the ends of the branches, purple in color, bisexual. Tatarnik blooms in summer: from July to August-September (depending on location). At the end of flowering, the fruits ripen - oblong achenes with a reddish-creamy crest.

As mentioned above, the tartar is widespread, but prefers the European part of Eurasia, as well as a temperate climate to a southern climate. Grows mainly in sunny places with clay, sandy, rocky, limestone soil, rich in ammonium salts.
